UFC 302 in June has added a battle of ranked strawweights with a bit of Canadian flavoring.
The 115lb showdown will see Michelle Waterson-Gomez (18-12) face Gillian Robertson (13-8) at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on June 1, 2024.
Cageside Press confirmed the match-up with a source familiar with the situation on Saturday. Magic MMA Bets was first to report the booking.
Waterson-Gomez is ranked #14 in the women’s strawweight division, while Robertson is one spot behind her at #15.
Gillian Robertson holds all sorts of records in the UFC, including most submissions wins, most submission wins by a flyweight, and more finishes by a flyweight. These days, however, she’s been working as a strawweight, with a 2-1 record in the division to date.
Most recently, Robertson picked up a TKO finish of Polyana Viana in Toronto at UFC 297.
Waterson-Gomez, once an atomweight champ in Invicta FC, has lost her last four fights, and will be in must-win territory heading into the New Jersey card. In that slump, she’s fallen to Marina Rodriguez twice, plus Amanda Lemos and Luana Pinheiro.
Since 2019, “The Karate Hottie” has just a single win, over Angela Hill in a five-round main event in September of 2020.
UFC 302 currently does not have a main event announced; in addition to Waterson-Gomez vs. Robertson, the following match-ups have been reported for the card thus far:
- Joselyne Edwards vs. Ailín Pérez
- Mickey Gall vs. Bassil Hafez
- Grant Dawson vs. Joe Solecki
- Michelle Waterson-Gomez vs. Gillian Robertson
