Finally a little bit of good news: UFC Hall of Famer and MMA legend Mark Coleman is awake, alert, talking, and breathing unassisted after nearly losing his life in a house fire earlier this week.
Coleman, 59, has been credited with saving his parents from the blaze that engulfed a Ohio home earlier this week. Fire Department officials later told Cageside Press that an oven fire had sparked the blaze.
The retired fighter, who last competed in 2010 against Randy Couture, managed to get both his mother and father out of the home before returning to his dog, Hammer, who had alerted the family to the blaze. Overcome by smoke, Coleman lost consciousness, and was rescued by fire crews and airlifted to an area hospital.
Hammer sadly perished in the blaze.
On Thursday, a fundraiser set up to support Mark Coleman’s recovery, as well as his official social media accounts, posted the news that he was awake. That came along with an accompanying video clip of a very emotional Coleman overwhelmed by the news that his parents were alive.
“I’m the happiest man in the world,” Coleman exclaims in the clip.
In some additional good news, a GoFundMe for the fighter to aid in his recovery is quickly approaching its $100,000 U.S. goal. The funds will be used to support Coleman’s living expenses while in recovery and to assist his daughters, who will be providing support while he gets back on his feet.
