Miami, FL — Friday morning’s UFC 299 official weigh-in employed a slightly modified format, one the UFC reportedly wants to push moving forward. And while the weigh-in window was a mostly orderly affair, things didn’t exactly go off without a hitch.
One fighter missed weight on Friday: C.J. Vergara. After hitting the scales late in hour one (more on that in a moment), he was cleared to continue his cut and weigh in a second time in hour two. However, at about 10:50AM local time, Vergara entered, wiping off sweat before stepping on the scale behind the barrier— only to miss weight again. In fact, Vergara clocked in at exactly the same weight, 127lbs, one pound over the non-title flyweight limit.
His bout with Assu Almabayev moves forward, with Vergara hit by a 30% fine. As for the weigh-in format, all fighters were required to weigh in during the first hour. Anyone missing weight, and cleared by doctors to continue their cut, would weigh in during hour two. That news was first reported by Cageside Press, with ESPN breaking the news early Friday that the UFC is hoping to make this the standard weigh-in format.
That will of course require other athletic commissions to buy in.
As for the rest of Friday’s official weigh-ins, all fighters made weight. Chito Vera hit the scales relatively late in the window, and didn’t exactly look fresh. Behind the barrier, he did make championship weight, however. Philipe Lins also utilized the barrier to strip down and weigh in, but hit the light heavyweight limit of 206lbs.
