Las Vegas, NV — Former UFC bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling got a little R&R this past week in Las Vegas, turning up at the 15th Annual World MMA Awards ahead of a grappling match with Kevin Dantzler at Fury Pro Grappling 8.
“This is amazing, man. This is good relaxation time. I’ve got a big grappling match at the end of this month, but it’s nice to kind of just see all the fruits of everyone’s labor, all my peers and everything,” Sterling told Cageside Press ahead of the awards ceremony. “It’s been a long year, successful for most of us, and just want to enjoy the moment.”
As for his fight career, Sterling is making his long awaited move to featherweight next— and is back in the gym. “It’s a slow process, it takes some time. Right now I’m just trying to get my lungs back underneath me, get ready to go and hopefully get ready for March.”
While March might have been the target, just days ago, a fight between Aljamain Sterling and Calvin Kattar was announced: on April 13, 2024 at UFC 300.
In the meantime, he’ll no doubt have an eye on UFC 299, where Sean O’Malley and Chito Vera face off. Infamously, ahead of Sterling’s own fight with O’Malley, teammate and pal Merab Dvalishvili stole the “Sugar Show” fighter’s jacket. Given the chance, Sterling would do the same.
“If Sean gives it to me, I’m taking it. It might not fit though, I don’t know. I’m a little bit bigger than him these days.”
