Las Vegas, NV – There is nothing normal about UFC welterweight Vicente Luque’s matchup with Ian Garry at UFC 296 on Saturday night.
The two welterweights have trained together in the past, and while everything had been amicable at that point, things changed recently.
“There was a comment that I found disrespectful so it definitely bothered me. At the same time maybe he’s just wanting to be funny or whatever. I get it. We make mistakes sometimes. Other times we just are trying to sell the fight or whatever,” Luque told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.
“I’m not going to take it personally. I’m here for business. I’m here to compete and still I think that after we’ll see whatever happens after the fight. I think he’s a nice guy. If he’s ever going to train with us again or not I don’t know. Right now we’re opponents.”
As much of a diplomatic answer as Luque gave it seemed that the welterweight did not want to add to the storm surrounding Garry. Garry has been hounded on social media by fans and fighters who have been talking about his marriage.
Garry chose to skip media day, and it’s a possibility that he’ll skip the press conference. Luque felt for his opponent.
“I’m not really into all that is going on. I’ve just heard a little bit about stuff. I did hear that he’s concerned with his family and all that. If that is the reason I mean I have his back,” said Luque.
“I think the biggest thing that we have is our family. Whenever somebody disrespects our family or crosses that line I think it’s a big problem. I think it’s very unfortunate all that has gone on regarding him and his family.”
“I think that’s something super disrespectful and I understand. If he feels better like that I think he has to do what he has to do.”
