The UFC returns to the Big Apple this Saturday for UFC 295, headlined by Jiri Prochazja vs. Alex Pereira with the promotion’s vacant light heavyweight title on the line.
No, that’s not the originally planned super-fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. As is well-known by now, Jones had to pull out of the fight injured; with luck, it gets back on the docket next year. Instead, Tom Aspinall moves into an interim heavyweight title fight against Sergei Pavlovich, with the winner expecting to get whoever comes out on top in Jones-Miocic — assuming they don’t retire.
As for Prochazka vs. Pereira, that happens to be a very compelling title fight between a pair of ex-champs (Jiri Prochazka at light heavyweight, Alex Pereira at middleweight) both known from bringing the action, and violent finishes.
Pereira had made the move to light heavyweight in his last fight, defeating ex-205lb champ Jan Blachowicz in doing so. As he had in GLORY in the kickboxing world, Pereira is now looking to claim a title in a second weight class — while Prochazka is hoping to regain the title he vacated due to injury well over a year ago.
