Las Vegas, NV – UFC welterweight Kevin Holland isn’t focused on getting the title and he’ll tell everyone that until it gets through to them as he prepares to take on Jack Della Maddalena at Noche UFC on Saturday night.
“I’m not really the guy looking for a belt,” Holland told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.
“I’m just looking to stay active. I’m looking to fight anybody and everybody, you know what I mean? I like how I get paid and the way I get paid is to show up and win fights. So I show up, win fights, do the contract, assassinate the person in front of me, collect my checks, go on to the next one. I don’t concern myself with belts whatsoever.”
In the history of the UFC there have been fighters that haven’t concerned themselves with going for a title shot. It’s just been such a small number of fighters that hearing someone as good and popular as Holland say it is a bit odd for most.
“Why are you guys so focused on the f*cking belt all the time,” Holland asked reporters at media day.
“I just told ya’ll I’m not worried about the belt and you go back and repeat, ask me about the belt, like I’m not worried about the belt. Why are you so worried about the belt? You don’t even fight for a living. Why are you so worried about the belt? I’m not worried about it. That’s the ultimate answer you need.”
Belts, historically, have meant bigger checks in the form of PPV points for fighters. Holland maintained that the title is not his focus, and maybe he gets paid better than people think.
“Maybe I’m already getting PPV points. You don’t know,” he said.
Taking Maddalena at Noche UFC in the co-main event might be about more than just fighting. Holland and fellow welterweight Joaquin Buckley aren’t exactly friends.
“Buckley was begging for it and I can’t let my son have anything without my permission. So I went and took it first,” he said.
“Nah I do like the way Jack fights. I seen him when he and Randy Brown fought and it kind of got me intrigued a little bit. So just excited to go out there, test him, test myself, and ultimately business is business. Handle some business.”
