Saturday night’s UFC Nashville was a Fight Night event that featured some promising match-ups on paper.
While the top two fights had shifted thanks to injury, the end result to the co-main event might have been an event better fight. Virna Jandiroba had originally been scheduled to face Ultimate Fighter winner Tatiana Suarez, but with Jandiroba pulling out, fellow Brazilian and former UFC women’s strawweight champion Jessica Andrade stepped in to replace her.
Suarez was undefeated through her career but had lost years to injury; a victory over a former champ could propel her into the title picture at 115lbs, which for years had been dominated by Carla Esparez (who Suarez had already beat), Rose Namajunas, and Weili Zhang, not to mention the retired Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
The main event, meanwhile, had lost Umar Nurmagomedov, but gained Rob Font, who stepped up to face Cory Sandhagen, shifting the fight to 140lbs in the process. Regardless of the actual weight the fight was contested at, it was a key fight for the bantamweight division, and a Sandhagen win could easily put him in the mix for a title shot.
