Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are more than just fan favorites. Their bouts — hard-hitting, violent, often bloody, and frankly life-shortening — have become the stuff of legend. In 2018, they threw down in one of the best fights of the year, with Poirier claiming a TKO in the fourth round.
Both men would go on to win interim gold in the UFC lightweight division. Both would suffer title fight losses to both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. Both had no expectation of ever meeting inside the cage again — yet here we are. Ranked #2 and #3 at 155lbs, fate has brought Poirier and Gaethje back together, with the “BMF” title on the line for their main event fight at UFC 291 in Salt Lake City, not to mention a shot at the winner of Islam Makhachev vs. Charlies Oliveira 2.
