Earlier this year it appeared longtime UFC alum Cynthia Calvillo was out of the UFC, after a stretch of losses dating back to November 2020.
However, it appears Calvillo (9-6-1) has been given a reprieve. The 35-year old has been booked opposite Elise Reed (7-3) as part of the UFC’s September 16, 2023 Fight Night event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Calvillo confirmed the booking on her Instagram Story, following an initial report by ESPN Deportes. The September 16 date is being held in conjunction with Mexican Independence Day, and is expected to feature Mexican fighters and those of Mexican heritage.
Since November 2020, Calvillo has dropped five straight fights, most recently losing a split decision against Lupita “Loopy” Godinez at UFC 287. The loss was her second straight split decision setback.
Calvillo’s most recent victory came in a flyweight bout in June of 2020, when she won a unanimous decision against Jessica Eye.
Reed has traded wins and losses since joining the UFC in 2021, and is 3-3 in the company to date. Most recently, she earned a unanimous decision victory over ex-Invicta FC atomweight champ Jinh Yu Frey.
The UFC’s September 16, 2023 Fight Night event is set to be headlined by a women’s flyweight title fight, as Alexa Grasso runs it back with Valentina Shevchenko. The following bouts are expected to feature on the card:
- Alexa Grasso (c) vs. Valentina Shevchenko — for the UFC women’s flyweight championship
- Shavkat Rakhmonov vs. Kelvin Gastelum
- Chris Curtis vs. Anthony Hernandez
- Tracy Cortez vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius
