Joanderson Brito got a late notice replacement in Westin Wilson after Khusein Ashkabov withdrew from their fight at UFC Vegas 76.
Brito looked to continue his momentum, gained from two straight wins by first round finish in the UFC Octagon, against Wilson, a veteran of the regional scene. He came into the bout as a favorite as high as 14-to-1 on some sportsbooks. The bout went according to those expectations as Brito was able to get the finish in the first round.
Brito came out orthodox, pressuring forward against the southpaw Wilson. Wilson stayed bouncy on the balls of his feet like teammate ‘Wonderboy’ Thomspon. He ate a looping right hand early. A few seconds later Brito cleaned his clock once again. Wilson wobbled but was able to clinch up to stay on his feet. Brito controlled him there and landed short shots for about a minute before he landed a takedown into side control. Brito worked to get to full mount but Wilson went for a leg lock. Brito did not appear troubled and landed some big hammerfists but Wilson was able to get the angle again and torque on the leg. Brito pulled his leg out just a bit and then went again for the punches. Wilson’s face was wide open as he worked on the leg lock and so he could not stop the punches. Chris Tognoni quickly stepped in, stopping the fight above an unconscious Westin Wilson.
With this Joanderson Brito finished a third straight UFC fight in the first round and now has to be on the shortlist for a fight against a fringe-ranked contender in his next fight. Following the win, he called out Hawaii’s Dan Ige, suggesting the pairing would be worthy of a co-main event spot.
Official Result: Joanderson Brito def. Westin Wilson by Knockout (ground and pound) Round 1, 2:54
