When it comes to UFC Vegas 75 main event middleweights Jared Cannonier and Marvin Vettori, they had two jobs on Saturday night.
One, of course, was to win the fight — no small feat given the time both had spent around the top of the 185 pound weight class. The second, perhaps more difficult task, was to sell fans on the need for a second and third fight, respectively, with Israel Adesanya.
Both men had lost title fights opposite “The Last Stylebender,” and in the case of Vettori, the Italian had also lost a non-title match-up against Adesanya earlier in their careers. Neither of their title fights left fans screaming rematch; the world would be a much simpler place for Vettori and Cannonier had Alex Pereira held on to the middleweight title.
Alas, he did not. So while the winner of Dricus Du Plessis versus Robert Whittaker (the latter another rematch) was likely next in line for Izzy, Vettori vs. Cannonier was about getting back in the title conversation. Assuming the UFC didn’t go and pull from their “out of left field” playbook and throw a title shot Khamzat Chimaev’s way.
UFC Vegas 75 takes place Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the Apex in Las Vegas. Following the event, tune in for the post-fight press conference to stay on top of all the developing stories.
