Yoel Romero fears no man in the cage. That much is clear.
Heights? Well, that’s another story.
Romero (15-6) is set to face Vadim Nemkov for the Bellator light heavyweight championship this Friday at Bellator 297 in Chicago, Illinois. With the promotional push in full swing, a press conference was held Wednesday at the Willis Tower Skydeck, all the way up on the 99th floor.
Who wasn’t there? Romero. Which, noted Chael Sonnen, playing M.C., was because of Romero’s fear of heights.
Yoel Romero isn’t scared of ANYTHING.
… except heights. He joined our #Bellator297 press conference on the 99th floor of the Willis Tower via Zoom: pic.twitter.com/7dEreZstKm

Romero did appear via a Zoom video conference, fielding a question about fighting into the later rounds of the fight at age 46 — something that doesn’t appear to concern him. Certainly not the way heights appear to concern the Cuban, who admitted it’s not just tall buildings that scare the professional fighter.
“Getting inside that building is a fight I know I’m not going to win,” said Romero. “I wouldn’t even go over there if my kids were there. Not even with my kids would I be able to go up on a Ferris wheel.”
There will be no Ferris wheels, no heights at all come Friday at the Wintrust Arena, thankfully for Romero. Instead, just a dangerous Russian light heavyweight champion who stands in the way of Yoel Romero finally claiming gold.
