UFC Vegas 74 (or UFC on ESPN 46 if you prefer) was supposed to have been topped by Brendan Allen taking on Jack Hermansson in a middleweight match-up. But with Hermansson out of the fight and Allen bumped back to a different date, it was flyweight’s time to shine.
Making his return after nearly a year out of action, Kai Kara-France looked to bounce back into the win column after coming up short against Brandon Moreno for an interim title last year. The City Kickboxing fighter’s opponent, Amir Albazi, had yet to taste defeat in the promotion — and was looking to punch his own ticket to title contention.
Unplanned or not, the event still marked a rare headlining gig for the flyweight division, which has become one of the most entertaining in the promotion after being on the verge of elimination by the UFC brass several years back. With Brandon Moreno running it back with Alexandre Pantoja later this year, the winner of Saturday’s main event could be within striking distance of a title shot, especially given Kara-France has history with the champ.
Also in action on Saturday, Jim Miller made the walk to the octagon for the 42nd time, extending his record for most fights in UFC history. Just behind him, Andre Arlovski entered UFC fighter #40.
