The UFC will return to Sydney, Australia this September, with UFC 293 set to take place in the Harbour City.
The September 10, 2023 Pay-Per-View event does not yet have any fights announced for it. Promotion officials announced the location of UFC 293 on Wednesday, however, noting that it will be the first of three trips to the New South Wales capital through 2027.
That announcement came just hours after FOX Sports Australia reported the promotion’s return.
“Australians are some of the most passionate fight fans in the world and we know these Sydney events are going to be massive,” UFC President Dana White was quoted as saying in Wednesday’s press release. “Sydney was the first Australian city to host a UFC Pay Per View, and we are going to bring incredible events every time we come back over the next four years.”
The company has made the trip down under 16 times since 2010, and earlier this year hosted UFC 284 in Perth, Australia. That card was topped by Alexander Volkanovski challenging Islam Makhachev for the promotion’s lightweight championship.
The Sydney date is expected to be held at the Qudos Bank Arena, where the promotion last set up shop in 2017.
Volkanovski is set to defend his belt in a title unification bout at UFC 290 in July, which may or may not take him out of the running for the September card. Israel Adesanya is a strong candidate to headline — but with Dricus Du Plessis facing Robert Whittaker on the UFC 290 card as well, the question becomes, against who?
