City Kickboxing talent Carlos Ulberg entered his UFC Charlotte main card fight with Ihor Potieria on the back of a three-fight winning streak since losing his UFC debut.
Meanwhile the Ukranian slugger Potieria defeated legendary Shogun Rua in his last fight to even his UFC record at 1-1. This match-up appeared likely to take place mostly on the feet and be all-out war for as long as it lasted.
Off the opening bell Potieria came out and shot a takedown but Ulberg avoided it easily and got to his kickboxing range. He slammed high kicks into the arms of the southpaw, Ihor. Potieria blitzed forward often but Ulberg stayed patient, though was unable to land a serious counter strike until two minutes had passed, when a nice lead left hook caught the Ukranian fighter rushing in and made him fall to his back.
Ulberg pounced on him and slammed in hammerfists as Potieria covered up. Referee Keith Peterson was not ready to stop the fight yet but Ulberg stood up and celebrated. The fact that Potieria did not get up but just laid there when Ulberg stopped hitting him was what made Peterson stop the fight.
