Song Yadong and Ricky Simon got an unexpected upgrade to their bantamweight fight, originally scheduled last week as the UFC Vegas 71 main event.
With Renato Moicano pulling out of a fight with Arman Tsarukyan, the original UFC Vegas 72 main event, Song vs. Simon was pushed back to salvage the Fight Night card. Two rounds were tacked on with that main event placement, and the opportunity to get in the mix at bantamweight would no doubt be afforded the winner.
Yadong entered the fight looking to bounce back from another main event showing, that saw a cut end his night early against Cory Sandhagen back in September. Simon, meanwhile, had won five straight fights, with three stoppages in that span. Simon had taken the long way to the top 10 of the division, fighting his way into the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series, and getting tough outs early on — including a win over Georgian wrecking machine Merab Dvalishvili.
The six-fight UFC Vegas 72 main card featured two debuting fighters, in Trey Waters and Fernando Padilla, with Padilla making his long-awaited debut after signing with the promotion two years ago. Visa issues had held up Padilla’s debut, and he was getting a tough out in Julian Erosa.
