2022 Contender Series winner and LFA vet Bruna Brasil stepped into the octagon for the first time at UFC Kansas City, in a strawweight scrap with Denise Gomes.
Brasil had not suffered defeat in mixed martial arts since 2017, and was riding a seven-fight win streak to start the night. Gomes, a fellow Brazilian who also won on DWCS last year, was entering off a loss to Loma Lookboonmee.
She bounced back nicely on Saturday, however, in a fight that was heavy on action as long as it lasted.
Brasil started the fight with some kicks and Gomes responded with a couple of powerful right hands. Gomes pressed Brasil against the cage but Brasil swung around to the back to get in control. Brasil had some time in control but was pressed back as soon as she broke free. They finally got away from the clinch and Gomes landed a clean right hand. Soon after she landed two more right hands having Brasil back peddling. Gomes closed the round by getting an easy takedown.
Those right hands were a sign of things to come.
In round two Gomes started off with that right hand pushing Brasil aginst the cage. Gomes got a trip takedown but Brasil got right back to her feet. Even though Gomes was the smaller fighter she was bullying Brasil with pressure and in the clinch. Brasil threw a head kick when she got away but Gomes caught it getting the takedown briefly. In an exchange, Gomes landed and dropped Brasil with a right hook. She jumped in with a barrage of ground and pound until the ref stopped it.
First finish of the night goes to Denise Gomes!!
