Bantamweights Marlon “Chito” Vera and Cory Sandhagen topped the UFC’s return to San Antonio on Saturday night, which also saw names like Holly Holm and Maycee Barber on the UFC San Antonio card.
It was a tumultuous affair all throughout Fight Week, with UFC San Antonio losing one fight per day on each of Thursday (Hailey Cowan vs. Tamires Vidal), Friday (Manuel Torres vs. Trey Ogden), and Saturday (Alex Perez vs. Manel Kape, with the event’s preliminary card already underway).
The end result was a four-pack of prelim fights followed by a six-fight main card. Early action saw some thrilling back-and-forth match-ups, best exemplified by CJ Vergara enduring a 10-8 round against Daniel Lacerda before storming back to capture a TKO finish in the second round.
As for the main event, that found Vera looking to push closer to title contention, while Sandhagen was also looking to get back in the mix. Ranked #5 and coming off a single win, Sandhagen might have a bit more work to do. But the #3-ranked Vera would have an argument for a title shot with a win — were it not for Henry Cejudo and Sean O’Malley ahead of him in line.
