A trilogy fight for the welterweight title in the main event. A violent lightweight collision as the co-feature. An up-and-coming flyweight looking to stake her claim in an increasingly crowded title picture.
UFC 286 had a lot to offer as the promotion touched down in London, England for a rare PPV on British soil. Leon Edwards was looking to prove that, no matter how much of a hail Mary his head kick finish of Kamaru Usman had been last year, it was no fluke. “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman, meanwhile, was on a quest to reclaim gold, retake the throne, and prove himself to be the better man in the rubber match of the pair’s trilogy.
The aforementioned collision in the co-main event of UFC 286 may have actually been the most anticipated fight on the card, with apologies to the headliners. Justin Gaethje has long been the most entertaining fighter in MMA, without a dull fight in the bunch. Rafael Fiziev was quickly becoming known for his own finishing ability, with punishing kicks and heavy hands that had seen him stop Renato Moicano, Brad Riddell, and former champ Rafael dos Anjos.
Casey O’Neill, meanwhile, looked to stake a claim among the contenders in the women’s flyweight division. A victory over ex-title challenger and Invicta FC champ Jennifer Maia would certainly help with that, as O’Neill looked for a piece of the spotlight alongside the likes of Manon Fiorot and Erin Blanchfield.
