UFC Vegas 69, which went down Saturday night at the Apex in Las Vegas, was admittedly thin on paper.
However, the main event had transformed into a rather intriguing top prospect versus former champion fight, one that could leave the winner with a fresh title shot — in different divisions.
With Taila Santos out, Jessica Andrade had stepped up on short notice. The former UFC women’s strawweight champion was taking the flyweight bout less than a month removed from her last outing, a dominant win over Lauren Murphy at UFC 283, also at 125lbs. Despite moonlighting as a flyweight (where she had previously challenged Valentina Shevchenko for the title), Andrade’s eyes were set on a strawweight title shot against Weili Zhang next.
For Erin Blanchfield, Santos’ original opponent, a win over the former champ might be enough to land her a title fight against flyweight Queen Shevchenko. A top prospect who made the jump to the UFC from Invicta, Blanchfield had been perfect in the octagon so far, and was coming off a triumphant submission of Molly McCann.
Also in action on Saturday at UFC Vegas 69, Jim Miller, who continues to set records every time he enters the octagon. For UFC fight #41, he was paired up with Alexander Hernandez.
