Long Beach, CA — Bellator featherweight champion Patricio Pitbull did not expect his brother, lightweight champ Patricky, to be in his corner at Bellator 286 this weekend.
Patricky, after all, has his own title defense coming up, opposite Usman Nurmagomedov.
“Yeah that’s difficult, but I understand he’s going to defend his belt, he has to stay in Brazil and train,” Patricio (33-5) told Cageside Press on Thursday. “That’s part of the game.”
Moments later, Patricky Pitbull arrived to surprise his brother — payback for a similar stunt Patricio pulled him a decade ago, as it turns out.
“Surprise surprise, motherf*cker,” Patricio Pitbull said jokingly after their reunion. “I did the same with him, a long time ago, like 10 years ago. He was like crying when he saw me, because it was before the fight, in the locker room.”
“That’s amazing. That’s gasoline. Fuel. Put fire on that,” he added.
Patricio Pitbull’s opponent this weekend is Adam Borics, another young contender in a division stacked with them. Having debuted in 2004, with 18 years in the sport, Pitbull has had lots of fights, and his share of injuries, he acknowledged. To hang with these young challengers, “I have to fight smart, train smart, and that’s what I am going,” he told us.
Speaking of Patricky, there was a lightweight grand prix recently announced by Bellator. Patricio is a former lightweight champion, but will only enter the tournament should his brother drop out.
“That’s the division of my brother. If he’s hurt sometime, I can substitute. If he’s injured, I’m here to get his place. But no worries. Not my division.”
In the meantime, Pitbull intends to show that he is still the best in the promotion. “I know I am the best. I just want to keep fighting, and show everyone that I am the best. I have the belt, I’m going to beat all these young guys.”
Patricio Pitbull faces Adam Borics in the main event of Bellator 286 this Saturday, October 1, 2022 in Long Beach, CA. Watch our full interview with Pitbull above.
