Las Vegas, NV – UFC strawweight Elise Reed has been busy in 2022 with three bouts in the calendar year already. The latest a victory over promising newcomer Melissa Martinez at UFC 279 on Saturday night.
Reed (6-2) had her hands full for at least the first round with “Super Mely” employing a kick-heavy aggressive attack. At one point Martinez threw a kick that Reed responded to with a strong counter right that hurt her.
After dropping Martinez onto the canvas with the right Reed was seen pointing to the commentary table.
“They mentioned the right hand. And when I dropped the right hand I says yeah I heard you,” Reed told Cageside Press among other media at her post-fight scrum.
Reed headed into her fight at UFC 279 knowing it was the last fight on her contract. The added pressure didn’t affect her however.
“Going into Cory’s (McKenna) was very similar. I came in at 125 which btw will never happen again. I’m not a 125er. I never have been. I don’t care how long I’m going to be fighting for,” Reed said.
“(Back to the Cory fight) I had to kind of show that I was supposed to be a 115er and this one was something like that. So hopefully you get to see me again.”
Martinez (7-1) came into UFC 279 with a lot of hype behind her with her kickboxing attack. The matchup with Reed seemed to be a fan-friendly one and it lived up to the hype.
“I’m going to take my losses even-keel, but if you don’t think I’m a good striker, you don’t quite know me as well. I think everybody is real excited with this matchup because we’re both striker. Having her have a bunch of kudos and amp to all that was better for me,” she said.
“I’m happy to brawl as well. I can hit back.”
