San Diego, CA — UFC strawweight Angela Hill saw her fight with Lupita “Loopy” Godinez bumped up by about a month and a half, with the bout now arriving at UFC San Diego this weekend.
It’s an opportunity “Overkill” jumped at: for roughly seven years or so, San Diego has been Hill’s adopted home town.
The fight now comes at a catchweight, which was the lone stipulation from Hill (13-12). “I definitely wanted it to be at least close to 115, so we settled on a catchweight of 120,” she told media outlets including Cageside Press during Wednesday’s media day. “But I was stoked to get the chance to fight in San Diego, because I’ve always wanted to fight in my home town. This is going to be the first time.”
Although Angela Hill is in her own back yard, it’s Godinez who believes she’ll get the bigger crowd reaction, thanks to a large Hispanic population in the arena. “She can enjoy the crowd pop, but I’m going to enjoy being in San Diego the rest of my life,” Hill said on that front. “Not f*cking Canada, f*ck that.”
Godinez’s family immigrated to Canada when she was a teen; the Mexican calls British Columbia home. In her opponent, Hill sees a fighter much like herself. One who is willing to show up and fight.
“I think she’s a gamer. She’s a gamer just like me,” Hill said when asked about what her opponent brings to the table. “She’s not hung up on her record, and she’s not intimidated by anyone. And that’s really cool. That’s how I am, that’s how I’ve been since I got to the UFC. every time I fight a big name, I’m like ‘alright, this is it, I’m going to knock her out, and then they’re going to ask me to fight for the title again.’ Unfortunately it hasn’t happened yet, but that’s the mindset going into each fight. And I feel she has a similar mindset.”
