San Diego, CA — Loopy Godinez has been in the UFC for less than 18 months, and is about to enter her sixth fight in the promotion at UFC San Diego.
Her fight against Angela Hill was originally scheduled for October, only to be pulled forward to help bolster Saturday’s line-up.
“I think they were losing fights or something, and they just asked me; my team and I decided yeah, why not? Might as well do it now,” Godinez (8-2) revealed Wednesday. “We’re ready, and yeah, we agreed to it.”
Thanks to the now-short notice nature of the fight, Godinez vs. Hill has been booked at a 120lb catchweight. That’s something Godinez, no stranger to short-notice fights, requested.
“I could make 115 if I really wanted to, but I was the one that said ‘okay, 120,’ just because I don’t want to put my body through a weight cut like that again,” Godinez told media outlets including Cageside Press. “Because I’ve done it in the past. I just want to feel good, be strong instead of having a big weight cut that I can do, and I can make, but there’s no point to it.”
When it comes to Hill, the word has been out for a bit: take her down. Exploit her apparent deficiencies on the ground.
“Yeah, I mean my grappling is there. I can definitely take the fight anywhere I want,” Godinez replied when asked if that was the game plan. “If I feel good on the feet, I may just stay standing up and show my boxing skills or my kickboxing skills. But I’ll see on the night.”
As one of several Hispanic fighters on the UFC San Diego card, Godinez knows it’s a big night for the region, and particularly her native Mexico. After months of hearing about English fight fans, could it be time for the UFC to return to Mexico, for fans their to show how vocal they can be as well?
“Oh yeah, for sure. And I know they know that. I know they know that Mexicans are pretty passionate, pretty crazy and we bring the heat,” Godinez stated. “I think this Saturday is going to be a good show for that.”
