A match-up featuring a pair of middleweight contenders looking to get back in the win column is in the works to headline the UFC’s October 15 card.
Jared Cannonier (15-6) vs. Sean Strickland (25-4) is in the works to headline the Fight Night show, which does not have an offcial venue, location, or broadcast plan announced. News of pairing was first reported by Ariel Helwani.
Contracts have not been signed, and the Apex in Las Vegas is the likely destination, per Helwani’s initial report.
Strickland and Cannonier both competed at UFC 276 last month, and both had rough nights at the office. Strickland, paired up with Alex Pereira, was pretty much smoked in half a round. The KO loss snapped a six-fight win streak for the controversial middleweight, who was banned from social media site Twitter just ahead of the fight, allegedly due to transphobic comments.
Cannonier fared only slightly better in his title fight with Israel Adesanya the very same night. “The Killa Gorilla” did go the distance, but lost a decision in a fight widely derided for its lack of action.
The UFC’s October 15, 2022 Fight Night card currently boasts the following match-ups:
- Jared Cannonier vs. Sean Strickland
- Angela Hill vs. Lupita Godinez
- Sam Hughes vs. Piera Rodríguez
- Cub Swanson vs. Jonathan Martinez
- Brandon Royval vs. Askar Askarov
- C.J. Vergara vs. Tatsuro Taira
