Contender Series’ Chris Duncan on Moving Forward

Chris Duncan didn’t have an ideal experience with Contender Series in 2021. His original bout with Manuel Gaxhja was canceled with his opponent missed weight. He then had to take a new date with a new opponent and less time to prepare. That opponent happened to be highly-touted Slava Borshchev, who would go on to defeat Duncan.

Despite all of this, Duncan doesn’t dwell on what happened last year. Instead, he’s got a less than PC motto he uses to remind himself of that fact.

“You’ve got to p*ss with the c*ck you’ve got,” he said with a laugh. “You’ve just got to deal with it.”

The Scottish fighter feels that looking at things in the past only harms you. Making excuses or looking for reasons that things happened, in the end, makes it so that you don’t grow and don’t make yourself better.

“There’s no point in dwelling on what I should have done and what I shouldn’t have done. That’s the sport that we live in and that’s life,” Duncan explained. “The biggest honest truth you tell [to] yourself.”

With all that being said, Duncan does feel that all of those obstacles have made it so that his trip to Contender Series this year will be a success. Having dealt with so many things last time, there is nothing that could pop up this time that’ll take him off of his objective.

“There’s a lot of stuff that went on. I had a newborn baby at home. I had [multiple] weight cuts. My coach had to leave in the middle of my training camp,” he recalls. “This time around, there’s going to be nothing that can phase me. I just need to be level headed… I’m just going to be plain faced, get the job done, and come home to see my family.”

He’ll get a chance to write all those wrongs and live by his motto this Tuesday on week 2 of Contender Series. He’ll fight Charlie Campbell in the main event on ESPN+.
