The burning storyline surrounding UFC 276’s main event had become one not about the fight, but about the next fight.
That’s often a recipe for disaster. But with Sean Strickland making plenty of noise at this week’s pre-fight press conference, and paired up with Alex Pereira on the main card of UFC 276, it was hard not to look past Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier. After all, Cannonier wasn’t given much more than a puncher’s chance opposite “The Last Stylebender,” while Pereira had twice defeated the middleweight champion in their kickboxing days.
But for either Adesanya vs. Strickland or Adesanya vs. Pereira to happen, Izzy would need to get past a powerful, motivated “Killa Gorilla,” who simply did not care what the odds-makers had to say about the fight.
The co-main event of UFC 276 was about legacy, meanwhile. For Alexander Volkanovski, it was a chance to prove once and for all that he was a better fighter than Max Holloway. For Holloway, the fight was a chance to right a wrong, with many seeing the pair’s last meeting as a robbery.
It was also a chance for “Blessed” to finally regain his title.
