Ryan Spann put the light heavyweight division on notice with an impressive first-round stoppage against the always dangerous Ion Cutelaba in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 54.
Light heavyweights Ryan Spann and Ion Cutelaba threw down in the UFC Vegas 54 co-main event on Saturday. Spann had entered the night off a loss to Anthony Smith, while Moldova’s Cutelaba was unbeaten in his last two fights.
Both men landed right out of the gate to start the enticing light heavyweight contest. Spann connected with a combination after missing with a front kick. Cutelaba countered with a takedown right into mound, but Spann maneuvered his way out quickly. They returned to the feet, where Cutelaba threw a pair of punches and landed another takedown. This time it was away from the fence, but that didn’t matter to Spann as he pushed Cutelaba off of him with ease. Cutelaba kept the pressure on again with another takedown, then Spann broke free again. Cutelaba tried to keep him down with a pair of looping punches that took himself off of his feet. Spann then snatched a guillotine choke and Cutelaba tapped quickly, giving Spann another first round finish.
