Las Vegas, NV – One of the quieter three-fight win streak holders comes into UFC Vegas 53 looking to continue his rise back up the middleweight rankings as Gerald Meerschaert faces Krzysztof Jotko on Saturday night.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Meerschaert spoke on his win streak.
“It feels great. First three-fight win streak in the UFC (for Meerschaert). You know I’m on top of the world with that, and I want to keep that train going,” Meerschaert said.
“After the most recent loss, taking the time to kind of relax and decompress, let my body heal and really look inward and just kind of focus on myself. Drown out all the noise. Get back to working and not worrying about anything else but being the best that I can be.”
In order to continue that train Meerschaert will have to get past Jotko (23-5) who is as experienced as he is and coming off a split-decision win over Misha Cirkunov in Oct 2021.
“He’s tough. He’s a good opponent. He likes to stay on the outside, likes to strike. He mixes in his takedowns very well. For a guy that stays on the outside when he does throw he’ll throw with reckless abandon. It’s not like he’s just playing the jab game. He’s swinging, does a lot of check hooks, he’ll throw a lot of hook-cross and really try to take you out. But then he’s on his bike again moving. It’s a good and different stylistic matchup. I got forward, he hops in and out and goes backward,” Meerschaert said.
“We’ll see who’s more stubborn with their game plan.”
A win over Jotko could help Meerschaert move his way up into a ranking and some big matchups on his way to a title shot. Meerschaert shot that down in a comical way.
“No. Get me on the Sean O’Malley plan. I want the worst guys possible for the most money. That’s what I’m here for to make a living. Once I’m ready to get the title shot then we can talk about that. Until then I want all scrubs,” Meerschaert laughed.
Are for any exact names of scrubs that Meerschaert wants to face next, well let’s just say he laughed the question off a bit.
“No! No I got no idea. Usually I’m the one that on the list that people are picking! I’ve never got to actually….they’re pretty much like ‘Do you want to fight this guy, yes or no?’ Which, hey that’s fine. That’s what I signed up for, but let me get somebody like fresh off the Contender Series or something,” Meerschaert laughed.
