Bubba Jenkins sees the 2022 PFL season as a chance to correct the mistakes he made last year.
Featherweight Jenkins (16-5), a former Brave CF champ, was bounced from the playoffs by Chris Wade last year. With the new season for featherweights kicking off Thursday at PFL 2 in Arlington, Texas, the NCAA Division I wrestling champ said Tuesday that “My focus is on me, my focus is on my preparation and things that I do. Because when I’m in the right place and I’m in the right focus, it’s all about me.”
“I haven’t really looked to how I stack up against other people, other than the people that I’ve actually already fought,” he added, speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press at the PFL 2 media day. “So we’re correcting the mistakes and trying to move forward.”
Jenkins sees the title as “very obtainable” this year. “In reaching distance. So obtainable that I know exactly where the belt is at this very moment. I’m excited about the opportunities; I get to re-do my mistakes and re-align my focus. I believe that once I’m plugged in, locked in, focused in, I’m one of the hardest 45’ers to beat in any organization. You could tell my mindset, you could tell passion, you can tell who I am by just hearing the way I speak. Once I can put those actions behind that, you know I’m somebody to reckon with.”
Kicking off the season against UFC veteran Kyle Bochniak, Jenkins is predicting an undefeated season en route to that title. He also intends to make a statement, going after the extra points awarded for finishes during the PFL regular season.
“My focus is lasered, and this year you can expect me to go 4-0. And I’m going to try to put up some big points. I’m not going to rest on my laurels, if I’m up big, especially if I’m up two rounds, I’m going to be looking for the big bonus points. I’m not trying to just squeeze by wins or try to add a bunch of decisions to this year’s championship. I want to do it in devastating fashion, and like any good athlete on a contract, we’re trying to put up some big numbers.”
