San Jose, CA – Short notice opponents bring a different set of challenges, but for Bellator featherweight Aaron Pico it was just another challenge.
Speaking to reporters after his bout with Adli Edwards at Bellator 277 on Friday night, Pico spoke on the fight itself and how he felt about it.
“I feel really good. It was a good night for out team. I felt sharp in there I saw everything. He didn’t really land anything, but there’s still some adjustments I need to make and get better obviously,” Pico said.
The win over Edwards makes it six straight wins for Pico which begs the question of what is next for the featherweight.
“I don’t really know where….I obviously want to fight ranked guys and inch my way closer to being world champion and just keep improving like I am. I’m having a lot of fun, I’m enjoying training, and it’s the best job I’ve ever had,” Pico said.
Later in the night, in the main event, the Bellator featherweight title was up for grabs between current champion AJ McKee and former champion Patricio Pitbull. After five grueling rounds Pitbull reclaimed the belt by decision.
“It was a close fight. They’re both, I believe, the best 145ers in the world. A close fight, but AJ is going to be back he really, really is. He’s (got) so much talent. I just talked to him right now, I said ‘Just keep your head up, get back in the gym, you know what you need to work on.’ And he’s going to be back for sure,” Pico said.
With the featherweight title score between McKee and Pitbull tied up at 1-1, Pico isn’t really sure he’ll be up for a title shot soon.
“We have to see where we go. I’ll talk to my manager Ali and go from there. There’s nothing I can really say right now, I just fought Edwards. Now it’s 1 and 1 between Pitbull and AJ so I’m assuming they’re going to have a rematch. I’ll just stay focused, keep getting better, and my time will come to be world champion,” said Pico.
“It really will, and when that time comes, I’ll do it.”
