With this year’s Dana White’s Contender Series in the line of sight, fights are starting to be booked. Among them, flyweight action will see Charles Johnson face Shannon Ross in a fight that will be happening on August 2, 2022.
Multiple sources confirmed the match-up to Cageside Press, speaking on condition of anonymity as the bout is yet to be officially announced. The flyweight fight will offer the chance for one of Charles “InnerG” Johnson and Shannon “The Turkish Delight” Ross to make the UFC roster with a strong performance.
Johnson (11-2) is the defending LFA flyweight champion. The 31-year old captured the promotion’s interim title last July, and defended it in August. At the start of 2022, he defeated Carlos Mota to become the undisputed LFA 125lb champ.
Johnson took some time off from MMA to box, and returned to the sport last year to become an MMA champion.
Hailing from St. Louis, Charles Johnson has been putting in work at Tiger Muay Thai sharpening his game. Lately, it’s shown tremendously. Johnson lost two fights consecutively in 2018, but today he’s riding a four-fight win streak.
Across from Johnson at the Apex on August 2 will be Australian-based Shannon Ross (13-5). Ross has been in the sport for over a decade dating back to 2010. While he’s suffered a few setbacks, he’s also a former Eternal and Nitro MMA flyweight champion.
Ross, 32-years-old, is 5-1 in his last six bouts and is coming off a big win for UAE Warriors. He hasn’t fought in roughly a year and half due to fights being scrapped.
