Throughout the pandemic era, the UFC has hosted its Fight Night events in just three locales: Las Vegas, at the Apex, Abu Dhabi, on “Fight Island,” and early on, in Jacksonville, Florida.
That changes this week, as the UFC returns to London, England for the first time since 2019 with UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Aspinall. And that, in and of itself, was a cause for celebration.
Not surprisingly, the card was jam-packed, stuffed to the brim really, with local talents. Topping the event, British heavyweight Tom Aspinall. The Team Kabon fighter had his first headlining gig on Saturday, opposite Russia’s Alexander Volkov, a former Bellator MMA heavyweight champion who always felt just a fight or two away from the title picture.
In the co-main event, New Zealand’s Dan Hooker looked to play spoiler against the returning Arnold Allen in an intriguing featherweight pairing. While Allen was returning after almost a year on the sidelines, Hooker was returning to the featherweight division — where teammate Alexander Volkanovski ruled the roost.
Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett was also in town, Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson was in action for the first time since 2019, and Jai Herbert was set to take on Ilia Topuria, who was stepping up on short notice for the fight — and moving up a division to lightweight.
Full results from the UFC London official weigh-in can be found below. It gets underway at 9AM local time, 4AM ET on Friday, March 18, 2022.
