Houston, TX — UFC 271 arrives Saturday, with a middleweight title fight rematch between Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker topping the marquee.
While that fight will get the lion’s share of the attention, a very fun heavyweight fight featuring Houston’s own Derrick Lewis, and popular Australian Tai Tuivasa, serves as the co-main event.
Both fights were made official on Friday morning, during the card’s early weigh-ins. Adesanya even trolled critics who had singled out his gynecomastia in the past. Things did not go quite as smoothly for a couple of other match-ups, however.
Setting a UFC record, William Knight missed the light heavyweight non-title limit by a full twelve pounds, coming in at 218. His fight with Maxim Grishin has been moved to the heavyweight division. While Grishin came in on the money at 206 pounds, he has fought as an undersized heavyweight before.
Alex Perez vs. Matt Schnell, however, is off once again. While Schnell made weight, Perez missed the flyweight limit by two pounds, and though given an hour, did not weigh in again. The pair have been matched up several times, only to be postponed or have a fighter withdraw. In December, their match-up was also scratched following weigh-ins, with Schnell not medically cleared to compete.
