The UFC’s first numbered event of the year arrived in Anaheim on Saturday night. UFC 270 featured the promotion’s largest weight class atop the card — alongside its smallest.
The contrast in styles didn’t stop there, as in both of Saturday’s title fights, at heavyweight and flyweight, a clash of styles could be found. In the co-main event, Deiveson Figueiredo possessed serious knockout power for a 125lb fighter. But the champ, Brandon Moreno, fighting the “God of War” for the third time, had already tasted that power and survived.
In the main event, meanwhile, Francis Ngannou, as always, had the ability to end the fight with one crushing blow. But up against the champ was interim title holder Ciryl Gane, a heavyweight that, as advertised, moved like a middleweight. With fantastic footwork, pinpoint accuracy and strong Muay Thai skills, Gane was perhaps the perfect foil for his former teammate.
Also on the card, flash Brazilian welterweight Michel Pereira faced promotional newcomer Andre Fialho, while Cody Stamann looked to prove that American wrestling could top its Dagestani counterpart when he took on Said Nurmagomedov.
