Charles Oliveira returns in the main event of UFC 269 looking to make his first title defense, but the lightweight champ is still arguably being overlooked.
In the lead up to the title fight between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler at UFC 262, much of the media attention from the UFC and general media surrounded his opponent, and the promotion of the Brazilian (or lack thereof).
After just one fight under the promotion’s banner, Chandler had earned himself a lightweight title shot and the bulk of the attention heading into the contest. But after “Do Brox” scored the thrilling comeback victory to claim the coveted championship, most would think that the Brazilian would finally get his proper due.
Yet ahead of his first title defense heading into UFC 269 against Dustin Poirier, in terms of attention and promotion, it seems as though the champion is playing second fiddle once again. It’s understandable when you take into consideration that Oliveira doesn’t speak a word of English, but at a certain point the merit of the performances should supersede everything else. With a chance to make history with a victory over the Diamond at 269, Oliveira will also will look to show the world who the real A-side is.
