A pair of top 15 UFC featherweights are being targeted for a fight in March.
MMA Junkie was first to report the news that No. 10 ranked featherweight Edson Barboza will fight No. 11 ranked Bryce Mitchell on March 5 at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event. A source close to the situation confirmed the fight to Cageside Press.
Barboza (22-10) had his two-fight win streak snapped in his last outing when Giga Chikadze finished him in the third round of the Brazilian’s third main event. Barboza will now looking to bounce back, and continue his run in his new weight class. Barboza dropped to featherweight in 2020, and after a very controversial split decision loss to Dan Ige, he would go on to defeat Makwan Amirkhani and then Shane Burgos at UFC 262.
Mitchell (14-0) has been out of action since Halloween of 2020. “Thug Nasty” picked up his biggest win to date as he defeated UFC veteran Andre Fili via unanimous decision. Mitchell broke his hand in the Fili fight and has been recovering ever since. Mitchell is 5-0 in the UFC and holds a Submission of the Year when he defeated Matt Sayles via twister.
The UFC’s March 5, 2022 event does not have an official location, venue, or broadcast plan announced. Additionally, no main event and no other fights have been reported for the card.
