Fabian Edwards’ brief flirtation with the Charlie Ward fight this Friday at Bellator 270 was so brief that it really hadn’t changed anything for the British middleweight.
The withdrawal of replacement Robert Fonseca after Wednesday’s media day, however, changed a lot.
“Nah it doesn’t matter one bit. When you’re set on fighting and you’re in the condition to fight and your mind frame is on fighting, it doesn’t really matter who you’re fighting,” Edwards (9-2) told Cageside Press during his media appearace. “They came to me and said the Ward fight was off, and I just told them ‘it doesn’t matter who I’m fighting, just find somebody.’ So I’m happy to find someone, I’m happy to be on the card.”
Well, there’s the problem. Fonseca was the man they found. But by Wednesday afternoon, Bellator officials announced that the fight was off.
“To be honest I haven’t seen f*ck all of Robert, if I’m honest. The little bit I have seen, I think it’s just a jiu-jitsu guy, gonna come out wrestling and all of that stuff there. But I’m 2-0 in Dublin, two finishes, and Friday I’m going to make it a third,” Edwards had told us. Unfortunately, that little bit of Fonseca he’d seen on tape will be all he sees unless the promotion opts to reschedule the fight down the line.
In place of Fabian Edwards vs. Robert Fonseca, Ilias Bulaid vs Georges Sasu has been bumped up to the main card.
