Top 15 ranked UFC bantamweight Cody Stamann will be looking to defend his spot in January.
MMA DNA was first to report the news that No. 14 ranked bantamweight Stamann will fight Said Nurmagomedov on January 22, 2022 at UFC 270. A source close to the situation subsequently confirmed the fight to Cageside Press.
Stamann (19-4) is riding the first two-fight losing streak of his ten-year professional career. He lost a unanimous decision to Jimmie Rivera last year and then in May lost another decision to Merab Dvalishvili. Before his loss to Rivera, Stamann defeated Brian Kelleher just days after his younger brother passed away. Now, he’ll likely be defending his spot in the rankings.
More than a year between fights will have passed when Nurmagomedov (14-2) steps into the octagon in January. He only fought once in 2020, knocking Mark Striegl out in just 51 seconds on ‘Fight Island.’ The Russian fighter is 3-1 inside the octagon, with his only loss coming against Raoni Barcelos. Nurmagomedov was scheduled to fight Jack Shore in September but pulled out due to visa issues.
No location, venue, or broadcast plan has been announced for UFC 270. However, the unification heavyweight title fight between Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane is expected to headline, as well as the trilogy bout between Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo.
The first Ultimate Fighting Championship PPV card of 2022 looks like this so far:
- Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane – for the UFC heavyweight title
- Brandon Moreno vs. Deiveson Figueiredo – for the UFC flyweight title
- Jarred Cannonier vs. Derek Brunson
- Greg Hardy vs. Aleksei Oleinik
- Rodolfo Vieira vs. Wellington Turman
- Ji Yeon Kim vs. Poliana Botelho
- Said Nurmagomedov vs. Cody Stamann
