Ranked UFC featherweight contenders Giga Chikadze and Calvin Kattar are being targeted for a main event clash on the first UFC card of 2022 on January 15.
A high stakes featherweight bout is on deck for the first UFC event of 2022. MMAJunkie reports that surging contender Giga Chikadze is expected to meet the durable Calvin Kattar on January 15.
Chikadze (14-2) is looking to continue his nine fight win-streak that has seen him emerge as a breath of fresh air in the featherweight division. A part of the UFC since 2019, “Ninja” has impressed fans as one of the top strikers in not only the weight class but in the entire MMA landscape. Most recently, he stopped perennial contender Edson Barboza in August to become the first Contender Series veteran to win a UFC main event.
Kattar (22-5) is looking to bounce back from the wrong side of a five round clinic against Max Holloway. While the bout was praised as a statistically historic fight for the former champion, Kattar was the one who absorbed a record number of significant strikes over five rounds and will have been out of action for roughly twelve months following the bout. The loss snapped a two fight win-streak that saw him best Dan Ige and Jeremy Stephens.
No news on a location for the event has been given.
