Alejandro Perez helped kick off the UFC Vegas 38 prelims with a nifty submission win over Johnny Eduardo.
Kicking off Saturday’s UFC Vegas 38 card was a bantamweight bout between Alejandro Perez and Johnny Eduardo.
Both fighters entered the night with their backs to the wall, having lost two straight. Extra motivation to make a statement in Las Vegas.
Eduardo had a clear strategy heading into the bout, and you could tell within the first minute as he kept slamming leg kicks early. Perez was utilizing lots of head movement and had fast movement in general, but he was fighting to the pace that 43-year old Eduardo was setting. Eduardo spent much of the first round landing leg kicks but couldn’t find much success with the hands. Perez started getting going with combinations near the end of the round but for the most part, it was Eduardo leading the dance in the first frame.
Perez tried to keep the momentum going early in round two, but Eduardo quickly got a takedown early in the frame and started working from full guard. Eduardo landed a couple of elbows but Perez quickly scooted up to his feet and landed a pair of huge right hands. Eduardo followed up with an overhand right of his own but Perez soon got a takedown and ended up on top. Once Perez got the takedown, he then started working on submission attempts; he attempted a guillotine but couldn’t get it, he then got Eduardo’s back and went for a rear-naked-choke attempt but couldn’t secure that either.
In the end, the third time was the charm. Eduardo was able to get to side control and was able to lock in a straight-armbar (scarfhold armlock) and got the tap. An impressive comeback win by Alejandro Perez.
