A high profile bantamweight bout is being targeted for UFC 269 between former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and perennial contender Pedro Munhoz. MMA Fighting was the first to report the news.
Cruz had previously teased a fight with someone ahead of him in the rankings on social media.
Dominick Cruz (23-3) will be entering his third fight since his absence going back to 2016. Injuries have severely hampered “The Dominator,” who has had frequent stints without fights due to a litany of maladies. He came up short in a short notice match-up against then champion Henry Cejudo last year but recorded his first victory in four years in March when he defeated Casey Kenney. Cruz is highly regarded as one of the best bantamweights ever to compete after going nearly ten years without a loss and coming back from a two year injury layoff to reclaim the bantamweight title.
Pedro Munhoz (19-6) is looking to bounce back from a disappointing performance against José Aldo in May. Prior to that, Munhoz had been on a 1-2 run, besting Jimmie Rivera but losing to current champion Aljamain Sterling and former champion Frankie Edgar.
UFC 269 is expected to feature a championship triple-header with a lightweight title between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier expected to headline the festivities. Other action will see bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes take on title challenger Julianna Pena and flyweight champion Brandon Moreno taking on Deiveson Figueiredo in a rubber match.
