The “Soldier Of God” Yoel Romero has big plans for his future, including a super fight with the Bellator MMA middleweight champion.
Romero’s Bellator debut is finally upon us this weekend at Bellator 266. He fights former Bellator light heavyweight champion Phil Davis in the main event Saturday night. The fight has been a long time coming. His debut was supposed to take place in May against Anthony Johnson, in the first round of the Light Heavyweight Grand Prix that is currently taking place; however, failed medicals put a halt to that.
Nevertheless, Romero (13-5) is excited to fight ex-champ Davis.
“Phill Davis is a great fighter. He is a very complete fighter and has done very well in his career,” Romero told reporters during Bellator 266 media day.
If Romero defeats Davis, the win should catapult him into the top five in the light heavyweight rankings. Still, there is another mission Romero has on his mind, one against middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi.
When asked if a super fight with Mousasi interests him, Romero answered quickly.
“Absolutely. Yes. One of our team’s plans is to fight in both divisions. Not with the goal to be champion in both divisions but with the consideration of my health. Not having to lose too much weight for the 185 division will be good to keep me at a good healthy status,” Romero said.
A fight with Gegard Mousasi is literally an MMA dream fight. Two middleweight juggernauts that somehow missed each other when they were both in the UFC, but now the stage is set. Before any of this, however, Romero has a very game opponent in front of him Saturday night.
