Gilbert “Durinho” Burns (19-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC)
Lightweight (155lbs): 8-3 (UFC)
Welterweight (170lbs.): 4-1 (UFC), Former Welterweight Title Challenger
Gilbert Burns is a grappling specialist from Brazil that has an extremely stocky frame. Unfortunately, Burns squandered the beginning of his UFC career by cutting an excessive amount of weight in order to get down to the lightweight division. As a result, Burns was cutting so much weight that he had to focus a lot of his training camp on cutting weight as opposed to actually preparing for his opponents. Despite this, Burns was still able to amass a very impressive record in the lightweight division before moving up in weight.
Burns has looked amazing at welterweight thus far. Burns went on a four-fight win streak in the UFC welterweight division with some stoppages over some big names like Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley. Gilbert’s lone loss at welterweight was his last time out against the Champion Kamaru Usman, so its safe to say that he made a good decision moving up.
Burns returns at UFC 264 against longtime welterweight standout Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.
