A pair of bantamweights will be looking to get back in the win column in September.
Al Zullino of BJPenn.com first reported the news that Jonathan Martinez will fight Nathaniel Wood on September 4 at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event. It is rumored that the UFC will be in London for this card. Martinez would confirm the booking on his Instagram.
After starting his UFC career on an eight-fight win streak with three of those coming inside the UFC, Wood (17-5) has two of his last three. He kicked off his year in 2020, suffering his first UFC loss to John Dodson, losing via third-round TKO. “The Prospect” would fight two more times on ‘Fight Island,’ defeating John Castañeda and losing most recently to Casey Kenney in a slugfest. Wood has been out of action dealing with a reoccurring hand injury.
Martinez (13-4) had his two-fight win streak snapped in March when Davey Grant knocked him out at UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs. Muhammad. Before his loss, he dominated Thomas Almeida to win a unanimous decision and then finished Frankie Saenz via TKO.
No location, venue, or broadcast details have yet to be announced by the promotion for UFC’s September 4 event, although it is heavily rumored to be UFC’s return to London.
The September 4 fight card now includes the following reported bouts:
- Khalil Rountree Jr. vs. Modestas Bukauskas
- Nathaniel Wood vs. Jonathan Martinez
- Alexander Gustafsson vs. Paul Craig
While not announced, the entire August 14 card will probably move to this card, including Darren Till vs. Derek Brunson and others.
