The second straight under-the-radar card in a row from the UFC, UFC Vegas 30 was the last stop prior to the impending, massive Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor trilogy bout.
In the main event, undefeated heavyweight prospect Ciryl Gane had another stiff test in the form of former Bellator MMA champ Alexander Volkov. Gane, a perfect 9-0, was entering the night off a win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik. That victory combined with his stoppage of ex-champ Junior Dos Santos had Gane’s stock sky-high. Volkov, meanwhile, was entering off a win over Alistair Overeem.
That kind of heavyweight showdown was primed to launch the winner into contendership — especially if Jon Jones and the UFC continued to find themselves at a loggerhead over “Bones'” move to heavyweight. With Derrick Lewis promised the next title shot against Francis Ngannou, there was plenty of opportunity should either fighter come up with a big performance Saturday night.
The UFC Vegas 30 co-main event, meanwhile, featured the second attempt from Ovince St. Preux to test the waters at heavyweight. Albeit necessitated by Maxim Grishin dropping out of a light heavyweight fight, OSP was still up against Tanner Boser — looking to bounce back from a split decision loss to Ilir Latifi.
The UFC Vegas 30 card kicks off at 1PM ET. Following the event, tune in for the post-fight press conference above.
