A pair of top-ranked UFC bantamweights will fight in May. Including a former champion in the division.
Brett Okamoto of ESPN was first to report that No. 3 ranked bantamweight Rob Font will fight No. 4 Cody Garbrandt in the main event of the May 22 UFC event. The UFC event does not have an official location, venue, or broadcast plans announced as of yet.
Promotion officials subsequently confirmed the booking.
Font (18-4) returned off a year-long layoff in terrific fashion as he knocked Marlon Moraes out to earn a Performance of the Night on the last UFC event of 2020, UFC Vegas 17. Font is riding a three-fight winning streak with additional wins over Ricky Simon and Sergio Pettis.
Garbrandt (12-3) is also coming off a great knockout. With his back against the wall on a three-fight losing streak, he knocked out Raphael Assunção with one second left in the second round at UFC 250. A literal buzzer-beater. “No Love” intended on going down in weight to challenge flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 255. However, Garbrandt would tear his bicep and would have to withdraw from the title fight. Garbrandt has clearly now put his flyweight plans on hold.
With the latest addition of Garbrandt and Font, the UFC’s May 22 event now looks like this:
- Cody Garbrandt vs. Rob Font
- Felicia Spencer vs. Danyelle Wolf
- Xionan Yan vs. Carla Esparza
- David Dvorak vs. Raulian Paiva
- Denys Bondar vs. Victor Rodriguez
- Rodrigo Nascimento vs. Alan Baudot
- Justin Tafa vs. Jared Vanderaa
