UFC 259, going down Saturday night in Las Vegas at the promotion’s UFC Apex facility, was an absolute beast of a card. 15 fights in total, three title fights, and at least three bouts that would not look out of place headlining a Fight Night event. To kick it all off, bantamweights were in action, as Mario Bautista rode a two-fight win streak into his fight with Trevin Jones.
Sporting a mullet and walking out to Motley Crue’s Kickstart my Heart, Bautista looked amped up from the outset. Jones was a little calmer as things got underway, nearly catching an early Bautista kick. Bautista would fire a head kick that was blocked, with the pair later grappling against the fence, Jones in control. Jones would land several knees to the thigh before Jones was finally able to escape. At range, Bautista landed a kick to the body, and hit home with a straight right moments later.
Bautista would start the second round with another crisp kick. But Trevin Jones answered back with a right hand that dropped Bautista! Jones added a few hammerfists to seal the deal, and soon enough, he had the win.
Thanks to Jones’ previous victory being overturned due to a marijuana suspension, the win was his first, officially, in the UFC. That overturned result still claimed our Comeback of the Year award for 2020.
