Youth versus experience was the storyline when John Castaneda took on Eddie Wineland at UFC Vegas 19 on Saturday.
A pro since 2003, Wineland was 1-3 in his last four bouts entering the night, looking to get back in the win column after a loss to Sean O’Malley last time out. Castaneda, seven years younger, was in his second UFC bout, looking to pick up his first octagon win after a loss last year to Nathaniel Wood.
To start things off, Wineland fired off a jab followed by a leg kick. Castaneda circled away, and Wineland followed. Castaneda landed a leg kick of his own and Wineland looked to land the counter jab. Wineland continued to press the action as Castaneda circled, before moving in for the clinch.
Wineland brushed that off, and continued to land his right hand. But bfore long, he’d end up in some trouble. Wineland landed a straight to the body of Castaneda but Castaneda fired back with a straight right hand of his own that looked to have hurt Eddie Wineland for a moment. Wineland moved forward and looked for the left but again Castaneda fired off the counter right and followed with a take down. Wineland was quickly back to his feet, but after starting out a bit gun-shy, Castaneda seemed to be in his comfort zone. As Wineland continued to press forward with combinations, Castaneda landed a solid right hand then suddenly exploded forward with flurry of punches that found their target and sent Wineland crashing to the mat. Castaneda dove in and looked to end the fight with more strikes while Wineland tried to defend. Not, as it turned out, successfully, as the referee had seen enough and called a stop to the action.
